Each year, hospitals in Southwestern Idaho treat hundreds of patients involved in bicycle accidents. All are at risk of head trauma, and more than half are under the age of 20. On a larger scale, more than 2.2 million people in North America suffer traumatic brain injuries each year. In addition, nearly 20,000 people each year have permanent paralysis as a result of injury to the spinal cord. Tragically, more than 100,000 people die each year as a result of brain and spinal cord injuries. (Source: Saint Alphonsus "Health Scene," Winter 2004, p. 4) Employees and administration at Idaho Emergency Physicians have joined together with other community members to form the Berman-Harviel-Miller Foundation for Recreational Safety. The Foundation, a non-profit organization, seeks to educate the community (particularly children) on the importance of wearing helmets and playing safely. We are dedicated to promote the health of our neighbors at play -- play, itself, being a healthy activity -- and the prevention of unnecessary injury or disability.
